Olympic Spirit(less)
I just love watching the Olympics! My husband thinks I’m such a dork because I simply can’t get enough of sports that a). I’ve never played, and, b). some I’ve never even heard of. Granted until the Olympics I never paid too much attention to any Fencing matches and I’m pretty sure I’d never even dreamed there was a game called ‘handball’&md ash; but if it’s being broadcast to millions and there’s an American competing, count me in!
Of course a die-hard Olympic fan, such as myself has some of the same heroes the rest of the world has come to love, i.e. Michael Phelps, Nastia Liukin, Misty May-Traynor/Kerri Walsh, etc. during the Beijing games. One of my favorite events of the Summer games is gymnastics and like Bella, my ass is still a little chapped over this new scoring system and the possibility the women’s gold medal winners just might have violated the age rules. But the Olympic games are never without controversy, are they?
One thing that has me a little miffed and quite possibly a bit disappointed is how few of our American athletes actually sing the National Anthem as they stand atop the podium for the whole world to see. Has anyone else noticed this? While we’ve established the fact that I’ve never been much of an athlete, I can say with certainty were I standing on the top podium with a gold medal around my neck I’d be belting out the likes of “…and the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there…” with a very swollen heart. In fact I can seldom watch a medal ceremony honoring an American without singing, feeling my chest inflate with pride, and shedding a tear or two. Yet I watch these athletes that have spent the better part of their life working toward this goal stand there almost zombie like.
Sure, I’ve seen several become emotional but I don’t think I’ve seen one of them sing the glorious Star Spangled Banner from start to finish (I will also concede I can’t stay up 24/7 so maybe I missed a few). Olympic athletes are competing for personal goals but also as a representative of the U.S.A. and I think the very least they could do is mouth the words to our national anthem, I’ve noticed many other athletes from other countries sing with pride their own, so why shouldn’t we?
Any thoughts?

Hmm...Maybe they're self-conscious?? BWAHAHA I haven't watched many of the Olympics events and I've watched even less of the medal giving. I don't know what I'd do if I was on the podium. At least I know the words to my anthem!

I LOVE your national anthem. Growing up in Detroit, and being a hockey fan, I heard it a lot since they play both before every Red Wings game, I assume because Canada (Windsor) is about a half a mile away from the stadium. Oh, wait, make that .7 kilometers away... (heh)

I am like you free, I love watching the Olympics. my favorite is gymnastics and talking about being PO at this new scoring system, and how they have just plain cheated, giving higher scores after obvious mistakes.
It hasn't really bothered me about them singing along, some do and some are just to nervous and don't know whether they should sing or not.

*teehee* Thanks :) We had to sing O' Canada every day in the first grade, and we sang along to the record!

Your national anthem isn't the easiest one to sing well.
I don't see why they even have age restrictions. It's supposed to be the best athletes. Tara Lipinski competed and won at 14. Why deny a deserving athlete of that?
The new scoring system is the same for everyone, so if your routine has a low degree of difficulty, you should have done something harder. Marta ans Bella are attention whores.
I will blog about the Olympics next week.

Sometimes it looks like they don't actually know the lyrics.
I'm with you on gymnastics. I also love diving. Heck, the truth is, I'll watch anything they're broadcasting.
Take care.

Oh pulleezzee they are in top physical condition and all of them have a good half hour break before the ceremony to 'rest'... Sorry I just like to see a smidge more patriotism.
I'm here... it's been a tough month :(

Once you get the hang of the new scoring system it's not terribly complicated, that is if you know the difficulty rating of the routine beforehand, that's what was throwing me.
Maybe I'm making much ado about nothing but I know even when I do attend a sporting event most everyone joins in singing the National Anthem.

You're right, actually there's 'few' that can sing it "well" but I think they could 'lip sync' it. I tell ya that Chinese anthem seems pretty difficult to sing too!
Honestly I worry for Bella's safety, he's liable to be shot over there with some of the things he's saying. A girlfriend of mine said the other day, "who gives a flip if the girls were too young", well I do because I bet there are a few Tara's in the U.S. and other countries that might have been contenders for the gold but due to their age they weren't on a team. As of this a.m. there seemed to be much buzz on the morning news shows about this, seems Germany is pretty chapped as well, lol.
Waiting with baited breath for your Olympic post!!!!

I acknowledge your point, but a good many Americans among others have cheated in the past. I just think there are much bigger issues to be chapped about, like Jacques Rogge calling out Usain Bolt for the way he carries on, while he turned a blind eye to all the broken promises by China that they made to secure these games.

Touche' wise bawdy, touche'. American athlete's have certainly cheated by way of performance enhancing drugs, no doubt. I wasn't aware Mr. Rogge had chastized Bolt, honestly the commentators had done a good job of that themselves. Just today I was talking with some friends that feel like the Jamaican track & field team(s) will be the next to fingered for illegal steriod use? Sour grapes? Maybe. I wasn't aware of lax security issues, care to elaborate?

I wasn't aware that any commentators chastised Bolt. I think Bolt may just be a once in a lifetime freak of nature like Phelps. All the cheaters have caused us to cast suspicion on everyone though, which is unfair if they aren't.
China promised to improve on human rights issues, media accessibility, freedom of speech, worker safety, pollution, etc., but failed to live up to them.
